The $10 Wager by a Money Advisr Columnist

She openly is taking $10,000 bets on Romney losing. What is this about, her own private Idaho. I like Obama he is fun and a great guy and his wife wants us to be healthy. No argument, but that is where it stops for me. The reporter is going to lose a sucker bet after what we have seen so far. Some on the the Left like the sizzle but Republicans have now convinced Americans that at least I may move to US Virgin Islands if Obama wins.

This Is Not The Job Market That I Knew

I earned $800/month in 1973 as a door to door copier salesman in downtown Manhattan which in those days made me a high earner. Actually, until I retired from local government in 2007 I had little or no experience with unemployment. The reason that when I retired as a relatively young man that I did not go after a traditional job and formed my writing service was that as you know there were very few of those good jobs around. I also was very "strong" ie best benefits, no debts, pension, no mortgage. Potential employers do not look at that as success, they want people that are more down and out and will not leave or look for a better job. I really hope for the sake of the young folks and anybody looking that they realize that today it appears that a robust climate of jobs everywhere is not going to happen as when I was young. There is so much uncertainty about health care costs and taxes and liability and the price of training a college grad, that companies are sliming down and making do with what they have. Maybe in 2012 we will begin to get the change we have never seen. A chicken in every pot one day will be here.

Why Bring Up Sputnik?

I would rather hear a kind mention of one of my favorite singers, recently deceased, Jo Stafford. One of the few vocalists with perfect pitch and clarity, she was an American favorite as she wowed her audiences back in the days of the Sputnik, I remember Jo singing You Belong to me. There is no recording artist today that can come within a country mile of her jazz vocalist ability. I bring her up because besides selling 25 million records at the inception of CBS Records and being an American sweetheart loved by our troops, the media did not really acknowledge her properly in my opinion when she died recently at the age of 90. If President Obama had to go nostalgia, I would have rather he said a few sentences about Jo Stafford, then bring up the Soviet Union. I even remember the Soviets sending up a chimp all wired up into outer space. If Obama was going to go Sputnik, why not chimp or even roaches, I think they went up and came back alive in a show of solidarity. Bobby Short was a legend at the Carlyle. How about that Dino and Jerry? I prefer American success stories.

Is Tax Avoidance still Employed as a Legal Method?

Of course it makes sense not to raise taxes on anyone in a Recession. Many of these so called wealthy families own small businesses or have very little left at the end of the year because fundamentally we are all mostly in trouble financially. If parents have three kids in college, cars and insurance, utilities and so much more, Congress must realize that everything keeps going up.

Years ago there was an accepted practice called Tax Avoidance where essentially wealthier individuals significantly brought down their tax bills by virtue of their accountants discovering in a shrewd way deduction after deduction, not very publicized but perfectly legal and accepted at the time.If the rich get a tax hike and tax avoidance is still okay, they may be able to erase it.

It is All About Jobs

When should politicians announce the revival or creation of new jobs in this recession of just under 10% unemployment? For a few years now I have heard promises of exact numbers of jobs coming back and plenty of "we have the potential of................ In 1974 I worked for a year as an agent in a personnel agency on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Somethings never change and I will give you one of them. You do not have a job until you walk in to the plant or office and sign the starting papers and your new boss shakes your hand and says those silly but immortal words Welcome Aboard! (ship?). Anything before that scenario means you do not have anything. Therefore when your politicians exclaim that thousands of jobs are potentially coming, remember that you cannot pay your bill based on anything potential. We really need to stop spending on particulars that keep the unemployment rate high. If we can rent classrooms to teach Defensive Driving and how to lose weight to millions of people, then we can follow this model and teach people skills so they can land a job. How many unemployed people know how to run the gamut of the Microsoft Office Suite? I am more confident about laborers finding work. Where is there a plan for millions of unemployed young people? Companies don't like to pay for trainees like they used to. Jay R

The Left Has A Plan

Why is the Democratic Party and the Left so concerned about the Tea Party breaking up the Republicans? They are already themselves
disconnected and should not be looking at the green in the other guys wallet. Tea Party candidates winning early races and a new and energized Christine O'Donnell wowing everyone like Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at the Hollywood Bowl cause them to be as scared as they always are of Sarah Palin. It is the party is over kind of fright. They probably will attempt a house divided cannot win strategy but the Tea Party will not be buying a schism play. Their ideology is Conservative and they want a Republican Congress just as much as the GOP does. They get their people in too. They will not under any condition go third party and the Republican Party knows to treat them in a courteous and respectful manner. So if the television stars on the Left want to bore us with statements that actually show creativity and imagination and occurred many years ago, my answer is where are the jobs? Use your audio visual capabilities to fight the recession instead of spending your hard earned money on defaming a nice lady who had a big election win.

A Practicality Objection to Building The Mosque at Ground Zero

I grew up on the Upper West Side and Brooklyn and total time spent was thirty years. I know New York and its residents very well and I have never heard anyone express hatred toward Muslims. I do not feel that the prejudice is the central theme. I believe that most people in this country according to the opinion polls do not want the Mosque to be erected at Ground Zero because they feel it is contrary to respect for the feelings  of loved ones who were so violated by 911. This appears to be  the prevailing objection but knowing New Yorkers they are adding an additional one. New Yorkers, and in this case those that work on Wall Street, the City Hall area and generally Lower Manhattan already live in a town with long lines, no parking and a lot of everyday arguments. If the Mosque goes up at Ground Zero, that's not going to stop the marching, civil unrest and arguing which will go on for years. I think most New Yorkers would rather see a compromise with the Mosque being situated perhaps nearby or in a pastoral setting upstate. That is viewing this discussion from a practical  standpoint. This may play out not to be possible but might satisfy everybody.

Harry Reid Decides Voter Registration For Hispanics

This will be short and to the point. Everybody in the business knows that Harry Reid offended first Afro-Americans and today Hispanics. I am calling out for the MSM equivalent of Diane Sawyer to conduct quick interviews with Jeanine Garafalo, Rosie O'Donnell, Chris Mathews and all the MSNBC news people and Joy Behar of the View and get some on the record statements. If you are going to dish it out , you have to know how to take it.

Lately It Feels Like I Am Back In The Sixties

Why is that when our President, Barrack Obama got elected, we all felt that because of the symbolic and historical nature of his win, certainly race relations and racism would not be the soup du jour topic of his administration. Black voters even if every one came out in an election which is impossible for any segment make up about 11% of the total vote. That has to mean that in very certain terms the Obama win was a rainbow, there had to be broad representation for him to claim victory. I happen to think that most of the hate people in our society keep it to themselves and just orchestrate their lifestyles so as to adhere to their agenda. Today Black professionals are in every industry and I doubt if they are wrapped up in some of the displays we are seeing on television. There will always be racism in our society but honestly, it is nothing like it was 40 years ago. Obama's poll numbers will sink even lower if his Press Secretary, the Artful Dodger has to field more speculative race questions than questions about Afghanistan, Unemployment and the Economy. Americans know that we get along with each other very well and they also know that some of these talk show revolutionaries are looking for their 15 minutes of fame at our expense. In this modern world they will not inflame us because we have been there and do not want to go back.

Let's Win The Election In November Put Gaffes Aside

Since Day One of the primaries politician after politician including some good ones by Obama and Clinton lingered on and on in the minds of the voters and media. I remember Lipstick on the Pig and the pants suit and guilt by association and so it goes. Now we are in 2010, close to the Congress change that will eventually bring our lifestyles back and I heard a beauty from Obama that is going to cause me to be more politically active as a Republican determined to help win as many seats as we can. In a nutshell, Obama said that the Israelis were suspicious of his middle name, making them more cautious of him (not verbatim but close). Well, let me tell you something, the Israelis are proud of the Jewish State and her struggles but one thing they are not is stupid. These variety of gaffes by Obama are not at all harmful but dwelling on them for too long could distract us from our real mission in November which is to start the process of bringing America back to prosperity. Remember the guns and religion remark? That was a bad one but we also spent a great amount of time talking about it and sometimes this helps Obama. It has always been the case that if the Republicans and Conservatives bang the drum on him too strenuously, he wins support. The Israelis are way above thinking about Obama's middle name as a rasion d're. I am suggesting brief analysis of these misspeaks in the future and instead let's all go to work.    Jay R

It Helps If You Look Good, Dress Well and you are In Shape

I am what some people call a health nut, I have never been sick a day in my life. I have never had a stomach ache or a headheache. I have never had any operation. I also have not been in a fast food joint since the days of Westsons or Arthur Treachers. I do not eat Chinese food, it is not consumed, by the way in China in anyway resembling the major salt and peanut oil packed take out we get in this country. Years ago I opened up a seminar company called Change Your Life Style and got hired to teach it in local adult ed. It folded in about a year because people wanted their pizza, cake and cheeseburgers and did not want to learn how to lose weight by exercise and diet. I saw the Kennedy Nixon debates in 1960 and viewers polled were praising JFK over the furtive and 5 o'clock shadowed Nixon. Pawlenty and Romney are tall fit and trim as is Bobby Jindal. Being in shape does really matter in 2010 because a high level official must send a message to our youth and adults that obesity and a sedentary life style can mean diabetes 2 and a host of other conditions like high blood pressure, colon cancer and heart disease. One thing about Obama and I am a life long Republican who cannot wait to win big in 2010, besides the smoke, he looks terrific, lean, handsome and great in a silk suit. I remember Billy Eckstine and his great success. This nominee is none of the above and in 2010 sends a message that a healthy lifestyle is not important. She also does not dress for the part of a probable Supreme Court Justice. I was born during the Truman Administration so you can just say it is a new world. Appearance and heath are still important. Maybe jobs will come back, you will still be compelled to look good on interviews.

Which Way Are We Going?

We did not require a speech to realize how defeating and depression laden the Gulf Oil Spill and the myriad repercussions that have not surfaced yet or may have been concealed from the American people or are simply unknown. I have heard plenty of blame game talk or legal threats of encumberance or escrow and especially obligations which will require the mega company BP and our government to go to court and settle it. We were advised today the the stock drop in BP is starting to affect state pension funds and we do not even know if any third party can stop or criticize a dividend between board meetings and why would we want to cripple the income of the older folks who invest for that very reason, a dividend with a better yield than the bank. We are in the middle of a recession that could slither into a double dip. The Gulf Oil Spill with innocent animals dying by the hundreds and livehoods ruined along with tourists probably rethinking may be more complicated as to other items that may come down the pike. Predicting or timing interest rates or the DOW is impossible unless you can talk to the horses. Gas Prices now could go any which way but loose. Unemployment and a livable wage has not improved much. So what happens if we now, in our state in America start getting double and triple whammyed? Like I said the Gulf Oil Spill is really a sad state of affairs. My heart goes out to the fine people down there and my sorrow to the poor, unknowing fauna.

Who Will Be Our Candidate?

The Republican Party should be thinking carefully about who will be our candidate for 2012. I do not hear much noise from Pawlenty and Gingrich while a brilliant man has had some issues in government and some others in waistline which make me think he is not the man. Physical appearance as innocuous as the concept sounds has been made important by JFK and Barack Obama although he smokes and eats fried food. We cannot commence a draft because of obesity and diabetes which would nullify for consideration 50% of the prospects. A president with a huge stomach cannot preach to the kids to straighten up.Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin as Veep look awfully good to me. Sarah Palin has to be doing her homework because she sounds so much more informed now. Romney is Conservative, tough and in great shape. Great ticket, I think.

CEOs Can Get The Job Done

What is wrong with a CEO multimillionaire hired at some time by a global Fortune 500 conglomerate coming into California and as an executive or Senator bringing the state back from the depths? I have been reading that Jerry Brown is the peoples choice because of his close ties and family roots in the state. Jerry Brown vs Meg Whitman and as an aside, a a very weak argument against Carly Fiorina, former HP head I think, will set the stage. First of all, I have fond memories of Jerry Brown and the Hippie movement back in the 1960's. I will never forget First Girlfriend Linda Rondstadt sleeping across his lap in a photo shown back home in the New York Mirror and Journal American. Jerry I always felt was ingenious in the way Andy Warhol and Lou Reed are, highly imaginative in his political plans. We have to take a step back here, I have close family ties to California and have traveled to San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles many times over the years starting in 1965 so I feel close. Jerry Brown possibly could have been the CEO of Jerry Garcia Neck Ties  or Ben and Jerry's but honestly California needs a high powered , organizational industrialist CEO type to solve what are presently insurmountable economic and social difficulties. Being a CEO for either corporation is a one in ten billion chance to be hired. That is how good these two women are.
