After The Recession A Job Market In Doubt

May 1, 2009

To hear some of our valued politicians and members of the MSM from the ground up tell it, American job applicants will be swimming in in job opportunities once the recession ultimately ends. I do not think so. Many years ago I worked on Madison Avenue for an employment agency as a job counselor. My duties were to secure employment openings and match them to job seekers and upon successful placement I made a commission. Maybe I had limited potential in that location but I did learn quite a bit about the nuances of any job market that remain universal. With the exception of skilled labor or hard labor in situations where nobody else has the physical prowess or desire to do a dirty job, it is never easy to get any administrative or executive position at any point in time. After the recession, employers who are savvy will look for bargains in salary levels because they know that job seekers will be hungry . White collar jobs usually require college and can get highly specific considering the course study. I would be amazed if credible trainee jobs will ever evolve because companies cannot withstand the expense of the training process and prefer an individual with concomitant and documented skills in their industry and furthermore, sometimes a following is mandatory. The insurance industry always offers plenty of sales opportunities but if you do not belong to an organization or a religious group or a political party meeting where solicitation is somewhat facilitated, I would say your chances of selling anything will be limited. Then there will be the plethora of scam jobs out there, usually identified as management trainee and travelling million dollar opportunities. Now you too can be a broadcaster or do commercials, and believe me, so many trusting souls fall for these mousetraps. The bridge builder engineers and the infrastructure repair guys will be the first hired. What happens to inner city individuals where unemployment today is 50%? The thought that through magic they are going to somehow ascend into boardrooms makes me wonder why we have not heard that much about job training. Finally there is the job interview, not that easy an experience especially if you have not been on them with much frequency. Most Fortune 500 hundred corporations desire an individual who will reside in an office to be well groomed, clean teeth and fingernails, neatly and appropriately dressed, acceptable content in conversation, decent vocabulary and syntax, non accusatory statements and even tempered. This is a  partial list of how to beat out 30 other applicants as stated. A big percentage of people being interviewed for a job walk quietly into the boss man's lair and slink into the chair (posture, posture, posture) and then proceed to "hide" behind their resume. Mr. Obama. who I will not as a Republican nickle and dime him when he achieves something good as he certainly did by beginning credit card reform, in my view is in need of much more refinement in his display of job creation. There is much more to this concept because we are talking about citizens who I believe will not just melt into well paying positions. I would like to understand that plans for extensive job and job getting instructional programs are being considered.

I AM STARTING TO BE GLOOMY UNTIL 2010

April 24, 2010,
I am beginning to think that it is going to take up to two more years to break even on the American economy. I bought 300 shares of Ford for a dime on the dollar because they took no bailout, had better managed debt and better simpatico with their union. During my lifetime, Lincoln Mercury through good times and bad is a line I would buy anytime over a foreign manufacturer. Ford is their owner and may infuse some of the Lincoln Mercury cache into the general offering. They were applauded today by the media for a mitigated loss. I invested in them but they basically are a one eyed man in a kingdom of blind men. Obama speaks of millions of jobs to be saved or created. I have worked for many Fortune 500 companies as I would shoot for higher pay or maybe it is my gypsy blood. The point is that in good times or bad it is pretty difficult to pass muster with any company big or small. Mostly, one person gets the job against a host of competitors and you have to be good. Additionally. companies either do not train due to the high cost of doing so or they simply will not hire inexperienced individuals. Without sounding presumptuous or pedantic, I have to convey my experience at meeting so many individuals everywhere who simply do not have excellent verbal and written skills. Where are these people going? I find it difficult to assume that everybody is going to get a $50,000/year position with benefits anytime soon. Whether you live in an inner city or a fashionable neighborhood the cost of living in this country is prohibitive and beyond the grasp of most citizens. Now with the prospect of a stock market in bear rally mode with no underpinnings, gas prices controlled by other countries, inflation on the way and plenty of time for credit cards to put us in the street unless an 8% interest cap with no fees is imposed in less than a quarter; we may be going to a very hot place in a hand basket. This administration in my opinion is way too distracted with other sometimes unwarranted and quixotic voyages and missions other than the very most important one, to get the American people out of this messy recession.

The Blame Game Has A Limit

April 20, 2009
It seems like at least half the American people or maybe even a higher percentage blame George Bush for our crippled economy and all that that entails. It is almost like Mr. Bush and his policies will continue to be blamed for lost dogs, failed marriages and just about anything sour in our lifestyles. Barack Obama skates out of this finger pointing and well he should. The citizens who answered that pollster were referring to what caused the meltdown and I did not see anything speaking about Mr. Obama's response to the situation. So here is what I think will go down concerning who is doing what to whom. Obama has not even reached his first 100 days and judging from the massive protests, people are loathe to accept the diminishment of their enjoyment in what was once the good life, now evaporated. Still it is much to early to blame this administration for anything more than tactical countermeasures. At 6 months in I think it will be a different story. You just cannot, no matter who you are or what your politics are blame a predecessor that far in. Not only does it wear thin as time goes on, but imagine if they behaved like that at Fortune 100 companies where they bring in a clean up CEO because the last guy fouled up the company. It has to come down to a what have you done for me lately or what can I buy with your potential scene. Of course it is in vogue to blame Bush at this point of  infancy and it is an easy out. It will not work for too much longer especially if social unrest increases. I wish the best for Mr. Obama and his economic weapons of defense. Even he admits that the buck stops at his desk, I actually admire him for his acceptance of ultimate responsibility and his general candor regarding the resolution of this hideous recession.

Ms. Garofalo Should Stick To The Comedy Stores

April 19, 2009 OPEN LETTER
Com-on' Jeannine, you are one of my favorite satirical and snippy lady comedians but as a political ersatz analyst you are really terrible. Why cannot show business luminaries as you are stay in your job and let the trained political scientists do the heavy lifting. You stand there assailing the creators of the Boston Tea Parties without possession of any hard data or evidence. Would you repeat all these assumptions under oath in a court? How come you get to exercise your free speech which in this case was bizarre and unsupportable and you question the legitimacy of the American people who assembled in a peaceful manner and expressed their views. One of your points was that right wing individuals planned these events for reasons that are so  imaginatively described by you and winds up irrelevant anyway. First of all, and as reported in the media, there were a few cities where tea events were created by political individuals. So, what? we are still living in a great country where these Boston Tea Parties are valid and lawful no matter if my grandmother helped to initiate them. It did take years and years for the US to elect a Black President. You are old enough to remember the March on Washington and Selma? What if comedians had interfered with those events?  Peaceful protest, it furthers our democratic principles. Jeannine, "LEAVE UNTO CAESAR'S WHAT IS CAESAR'S". Be happy that you are in the USA where you can step out of your recognized profession and participate freely in an unrelated field where credibility and knowledge is of foremost importance.

Confused, Delusional And Unprofessional

April 16, 2009

Did Susan Roesgen actually go to journalism school or was there a nepotism only reason she became a CNN reporter? Her reporting of the Boston Tea Party was so biased and factually drained that while Sean Hannity has always said journalism is dead today, I think he is referring to the individuals who skew their rhetoric purposefully so as to give the industry liability. I obtained my Journalism Degree in 1973 from NYU and I own a professional; writing service today. What my training revolved around was truthfulness and to refrain from self-serving duplicitousness when reporting or reviewing material for my readers. I do not think Susan realizes that Barack Obama became the first Black President due to the efforts of a diverse group of individuals who in a similar fashion, just like the tea party supporters spoke up loud and clear. Paving the way for Barack was not solely the Republican Party, but demonstrators for years now who come from all races and religions and political persuasions. By dissing the tea party legion, Susan is also putting down the democracy that made our country great. In another direction, she is indirectly ridiculing the very proud Americans who made Obama's success possible. I would advise Susan to take a trip on a sailing ship, come back rested and in the event that she never went to journalism school, study at night and somehow come to realize that journalism has ethics and morality, surprised?

The Special Olympics Blunder Was Unintended

March 21, 2009
As a Republican and as a citizen journalist on this site, I do not support Barack Obama politically with the exception of his feelings on inclusiveness in our society. Just because I differ with Obama's actions mostly with his handling of our nose diving economy. I strongly object to anybody nickle and dimming him over another one of his disconnects regarding the Special Olympics. Obama himself while seeking office used to admit publicly that he is prone to these sometimes harmless and juggled statements because I think he tends to start the talk but trips at the end. I have never thought that Barack Obama was in the slightest degree discriminatory against any vertical group. You all know, meaning every competent American citizen that especially with reference to handicapped individuals in this case striving for greatness that Obama does not think the way many blogs are indicating. He also has no motive to be the brunt of any criticism of dissing the handicapped which is patently absurd. Think of it this way, he is on Leno, he is loose  and happy, he has always been prone to the old mispeak. I still am loyal to the Republican party since the 1950's but when I lived in Brooklyn, they used to say Don't Yell Unless You Have To. One of our problems in 2008 was that we hit Obama with stuff that did not work and  he just got stronger,

The Subject of Suicide is not a Political Gambit

March 18, 2009

One of our more care free politicians urged a gentleman from AIG to commit suicide if he would not accept an option regarding the economic meltdown. This type of discriminatory and selfish remark is certainly not becoming of a representative in our government. While our suicide rate is low due to the efforts of our outstanding mental health system, research and development, and highly trained law enforcement agencies who together are cohesively preventative, the other side is that there are millions of Americans suffering from depression and suicidal ideation who were not benefited and maybe set back by this cavalier suggestion. What if the beleaguered AIG executive took him up on it and jumped out the window?. This in a country with air tight anti-discrimination laws do we elect an official who with one shell shot offends half of our country.

NEW PR0POSED MEDICAL DATA BASE

February 11, 2009

I think that Democrats have made a good move by proposing a national medical data base to assist doctors apparently with government
assistance however we have to look at this mostly concealed plan a little more closely. I heard Nancy Pelosi give a positive but government speak disposition on the data base controversy on Fox this morning by quote. Is this data base free of being hacked or made penetrable which will compromise those patients who are afflicted with stigmatized illnesses and past procedures such as mental illness, sex changes, impotence, plastic surgery and just about any uncomfortable medical situation. There are always leaks in  any database. Even an arrogant doctor could let it slip. As we have seen lately, Nancy's colleagues may now be outed under this 1984 system. Just recently, privileged records of major celebrities have leaked from hospital computer records to members of the  Press by greedy workers looking for quick cash.

Jobs? What Kind of Jobs?

February 9, 2009

Obama is promising the creation of millions of jobs and he has been on that track for years now. As a copier salesman in 1973, I made about $200/week and had the life of Riley. Today, if you make $50,000 at whatever you do, comparatively speaking you are a piker. Still in all whether you are a bus driver or a painter, I'll bet you have been doing it a few years to be at that level. So there are now apparently going be millions of jobs that in a perfect world will allow people in the inner cities and the suburbs to meet their expenses. Then there is the issue of training, and expensive proposition for a company who naturally would rather hire someone who is working the job now or in the past. I do not believe this is possible. How are four million people going to mesh right into jobs most of whom have no clue how to do the jobs in question. More importantly, show me the money. Who is getting the real deal $75,000 and up and under what circumstances? Don't you think the big companies know where their ex employees are? Word gets out fast and a great percentage of empty jobs end up with the same laid off people and their relatives. If Obama can pull this off he is a class magician and I promise not to comment negative about his gargantuan plans in the future. You just have to wonder because I meet or come into contact with so many people that just do not have the personal skills to get good, high paying jobs. Out of the four million, where do the Leno, man in the street people go?

"Say Goodbye To Hollywood"

February 4, 2009

Barack Obama's dime on the dollar to CEO's speech reminded me of that Billy Joe line in a nanosecond. We only have to review Steve Jobs at Apple and the recent media attention to the prospect of his retiring to realize the value of a top CEO to the conglomerates, the stockholders and our country. This was Obama preaching to the choir and placating the proletariat because the Obama economic staff fully realizes that this popular myth of huge pay to CEO's plays so well in Peoria but will end up being the causative agent of the Bill Gates, Mitt Romney, Steve Forbes, Carley Fiorina super people that intellectually are one in a billion and always succeed in creating jobs and wealth and IPODS are just going to take a powder. We could eventually experience an ex Sears manager running GE. As a stock player I'll pay a CEO anything if he can bring in 10 times that amount in value to the corporation and the stockholders. and coincidentally the economy. In the economic chain of evolution socialism follows a failed capatilism and then we have something following at least historically that I would rather  have others look up. You get what you pay for.

Rush Fell Into A Good Thing

January 29, 2009
The other day President Obama got snippy with Rush Limbaugh, Conservative radio spokesman. I saw the tiny dig Obama gave him as creating the very thing that a media personality like Rush can make hay on. I think that it was Betty Davis who said "I do not care what they are saying  about me, I just do not want them to stop talking about me". I agree, Rush Limbaugh, now equipped with an acknowledgement by the President of the United States for better or worse gets more publicity for the cause listeners and more limelight. I knew a New York State politician who told me 20 years ago that in the straight wins he accomplished by strong margins he never would mention the name of his opponent. In a similar fashion, movie critics will often neglect to mention the name of a small time actor that offended them  in a Hollywood restaurant. So I think the remark by Obama actually was of great value to Rush and if the President keeps highlighting our Republican Conservative personalities and commenters he will only elevate their message and personal status.

We Want To Give Obama Time

January 25, 2009
I like Barack Obama and his outstanding family personally but I am beginning to see the pattern from Election 2008 rearing its head as we get past the pomp and circumstance and get down to business. First of all, this administration jackrabited into a scandal which is the last thing both Obama who is evidently not involved and a harmed country needed at this point. The first bailout showed many of the features that created it as the pork and the corporate largess refluxed back. Now the American people are being hit with big time numbers that are challenged by both parties and it's like throwing dimes into a wishing well. The war on terrorism is changing in a way that we do not quite understand. When our government puts out their solutions to our citizens in what they feel is expediency and  purport to address our probability of being thrown into the street, I think the public would like our feedback registered because it's  our tax dollars that will ultimately support any grandiose or ill conceived economic fix all. For now, this is a momentary conclusion, there is nothing to stop gas prices from going up again. If we are at layoffs, high unemployment, stagflation and a plummeting stock prices when and if we go back to high prices at the pump at the same time, I was a Boy Scout, I know how to pitch a tent. As I mentioned, as an individual I like and admire Barack Obama however I hope as I would with any Presidency in these troubled times that his plans are fruitful.

Sarah Palin Needs A Little My Fair Lady

January 13, 2009

We are still talking about Sarah Palin in a big way which is a good sign for Ms. Palin as a future Presidential candidate. It is called continued interest by the public. The way I see it, she does require some image refinement so that she can appeal to voters all over the country who are not threaded to things Alaska. Another thought is that she should completely rearrange her apparent feelings and conduct toward animals. Shooting helpless mammals from a plane does not endear her to the millions of animal lovers that are also voters. There was also the turkey slaughterhouse event which did not serve to improve her image in this delicate matter. Notwithstanding all of this criticism, I believe she can be elected President at some time and do a great job. Ms. Palin has the intelligence, the political experience and the charisma to accomplish this and possibly with the woman vote in great  numbers. In order to seal the deal I believe she will need to use less blue collar vernacular, more Audrey Hepburn persona and no kitchen shots. If she is the same candidate next time, another Tina Fey will be swept in to hurt her chances and many Americans will not be able to sync with her candidacy.

This Is Beginning To Look Like A House Of Card Falling Down

January 6, 2008

I like Mr. Obama as just another bloke that I am. I also feel that Michelle Obama has vastly improved her image since her primary mishaps and shown us that she is a wonderful First Lady who puts family first. Let's fact it, Mr. Obama is a good man, extremely brilliant as a Harvard educated attorney. Problem is, there is too much stuff, so to speak that has happened since he was elected and related to the transition that are according to surveys, making Americans nervous about the upcoming Obama Presidency. There are too many huge numbers being batted around which must be added to the bailouts. Windfall profits are gone for the oil giants. Millions of jobs are promised but we do not know their requirements and benefits nor even their categories. From the inner cities to Rodeo Drive, people need jobs that can support their families. Mantra word change and non-specificity is still an everlasting boa constrictor dating back to Primary Day one. The Democrats we were told would step in much earlier then was historically a precedent to at  least accomplish some advance planning. So the idea was not to leave the whole thing to Bush and Cheney. What we did see was distraction after same. I prefaced my remarks by indicating that I have the utmost fondness and affection for the Obamas, they are decent people. I must advise that in blog after blog wherever I traveled across the Internet as a published but journeyman freelance writer since the onset of the primaries I expressed in the clearest terms that I did not think Obama was presidential timber. For weeks now I have been hearing about the buyer's remorse of the MSM. Do you notice that they as a group are starting to be aggressive and zeroing in much more than the coddling days? I may be a small journalist but I am proud of my mentors plying their trade aggressively.

Drill Baby Drill

January 4, 2009

I cannot even dream of any tax increases for anyone in this country. Most Americans cannot deal with rising prices at the market and soaring household budget escalations. The windfall profit tax now skates away. Layoffs are hitting workers and executives rapid fire all over the nation. People are frightened. If a family loses a combination of jobs and health insurance they may advance into a shelter of hobos. I think much of our economic woes could be solved if we drill and drill until the cows come home. We would eventually be energy independent unlike the hypothetical research green power theories and alternative method conjecture like analysis that are fine but at least half of Americans will be somewhere else by the time we figure that one out. Buyers are already laying back on alternative cars because they have found out with a pencil and paper figuring out that considering parts that must be changed at certain intervals, you are not saving anything. Anybody that thinks that gas prices especially with proposed taxes piled on will never go up is in a dreamland. If we go up to $4.00 again, think about a Depression with all the other economic issues attached. Mr. Obama has a long road to hoe.
